Selecting a vital signs monitor is an important and often confusing process for veterinary clinicians. Without an FDA or a biomedical department running cover for you, your decision is often made based on the recommendation of a sales rep with no technical background. Your buying process is further challenged by the large volume of private labeled imports sold by names you had always trusted. "The bait and switch"
Attached is a paper I have written for your benefit, illuminating some of the general considerations you may consider in your monitoring buying process. I hope this is helpful, after graduating college with a BS in Biology, I pursued a long career in the medical equipment field, of which a large portion was involved in sales, marketing and product development of vital signs monitors, and other medical critical care equipment. One requirement exists in all sales resulting in a satisfied customer, the need to correctly identifying the customers clinical requirements and selecting the correct product based on those requirements.
For the past ten years my focus has been 100% in veterinary medicine where anesthesia monitoring is somewhat new. Therefore, it is my hope that you will obtain some helpful information reducing the chance of "buyers remorse" following your decision.
I can install any technology I want in my monitor and can have it manufactured anywhere. I could easily take the easy road and sell unreliable imports, but I would rather take the high road and sell only those products that I would want to be used on my pets.
Good luck in your search for the best monitor for your veterinary needs.
